Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site

Haltwhistle Club Site is in a clearing of Bellister Wood, once the property of Bellister Castle Estate and now managed by the National Trust. You are likely to share your pitch with a large variety of birds, including woodpeckers. The area around Haltwhistle has been populated since Roman times. The town appears in the Domesday Book. One of the original spellings of the town's name “Haut Whysile” means “high boundary”.

Haltwhistle town is full of history. Examples include the 12th century church, a peletower – now a hotel – and five other Bastle Houses (defensible houses) from its Border Reliving past. The Roman Army Museum and Vindolanda both give facinating insights into the lives of the Romans who once dominated the area. The MetroCentre in Gateshead is the largest shopping and leisure centre in Europe, easily reached by car or train from Haltwhistle.
