The Hebrides comprise a widespread and diverse archipelago off the west coast of mainland Scotland. There are two main groups: the Inner and Outer Hebrides.

The Outer Hebrides have been inhabited for over 6,000 years and the many historical sites on these islands speak of an intriguing past. Lewis is renowned for its historic landmarks and chief among them are the Calanais Standing Stones. The Bosta Iron Age House on Bernera is a painstaking reconstruction of an Iron Age village.

Hebrides generally lack biodiversity in comparison to mainland Britain, Red Deer are common on the hills and the Grey Seal and Common Seal are present around the coasts of Scotland Offshore, Minke Whales, Killer Whales, Basking Sharks, porpoises and dolphins are among the sealife that can be seen.

The scenery in the Outer Hebrides is amongst the most beautiful in the world the sea is very clear. On a sunny day when it covers the white sands of the west coast it has more colours of blue and green than you can imagine.

Skye offers seaborne activities to suit all levels of experience whether sailing, diving or kayaking. There are opportunities to explore miles and miles of exceptional coast, plummeting sea cliffs, caves and natural arches and discover tiny beaches accessible only from sea. The Hebridean landscape is a never-ending source of inspiration for locally-based artists whose work can be viewed in town shops, and galleries. You can visit one of the islands' Harris Tweed mills to learn about the making of the world-renowned luxury cloth that is hand-woven by islanders using local wool.
