The Highlands are a historic region of Scotland. The area is very sparsely populated, with many mountain ranges dominating the region, and includes the highest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis.

Inverness is traditionally regarded as the capital of the Highlands, Aberdeen could be considered the largest city in the Highlands, although it does not share the recent Gaelic cultural history typical of the Highlands proper.

The Highlands lie to the north and west of the Highland Boundary Fault, which runs from Arran to Stonehaven. Smaller formations of Lewisian gneiss in the northwest are up to 3,000 million years old.

Fort William is a centre for climbing and hillwalking with Britain's highest mountain Ben Nevis on its doorstep. For long-distance walking, there's the Great Glen Way, the Speyside Way and the Moray Coastal Trail, while the legendary West Highland Way finishes up at Fort William.

The Highlands is also blessed with numerous sublime beaches including Sandwood Bay, Achmelvich and the Sands of Morar made famous by the classic movie Local Hero.
